Aust. Amateur Championship
On the 6th and 7th of March the New England District Showjumping Club ran the Australian Amateur Showjumping Championships in conjunction with the Armidale Show.
Recent rain meant that the ground was in nearly perfect condition and showjumping was allotted half the arena which provided plenty of space for the courses.
Friday saw the Table C for the championship held in the early afternoon with the track built at between 1.10m and 1.25m in accordance with the National rules.
There were 21 starters with Louise Light from Coff’s Harbour leading the way on Springbok from local rider Randal Mitchell on Vodka and David Cooper from Taree on Margaret River. On Saturday the second leg in the form of am AM5 was held with a very exciting jump off resulting in David Cooper on Margaret River just shading out local rider Brock Harvey riding his stock horse stallion Scout. This gave David the overall championship from Louise Light on Springbok and third was local rider Nicola Geddes riding Bubble Jet.
The rest of the programme went very well with a large crowd watching the Six Bar events which both went to the final round to get the results. The one problem with the show is that there were very few starters in the A and B grade events as most riders saved there horse for the championship.
The club height classes on Sunday were well attended with quite a few travelers taking part. Junior rider numbers were down due to several of the local schools sending teams to the Equestrian NSW schools competition at SIEC.
The photo shows David Cooper receiving the championship rug from club president Elsa Willis with Randal Mitchell who was presented with a life membership at the same time.
